Water park fun

As the kids will tell you, no trip to Dubai is complete without a visit to the Wild Wadi water park, the largest water park in the region which puts many to shame, with the sheer volume of rides and water based attractions on offer. What sets this water park aside from the many alternatives around the world is the attention to detail that has been included in the design, and the fact that the park has truly been made with the visitor in mind. Why walk from ride to ride, when you fan float down the lazy river connecting the 14 rides. Such a simple idea, but one aspect that makes that makes this one of the best water parks in the world. There is also the trifling matter of The Big One, the Jumeirah Sceirah. Enough to strike fear in to the hearts of the most hardened water park enthusiast. Are you up to a 27 metre descent at 50 mph with only a pair of speedo's to protect you? If not there are more leisurely rides to choose from, and many pools, wave pools, and slides to keep the whole family amused. For those surfers amongst you, you can ride the 7 tonnes of water per second that create the then the Wipeout and Riptide flowriders.

Desert Safaris

If you prefer to keep your Chelsea Tractor for the school run, you will be pleased to hear that you don’t have to get your own 4x4 dirty as there are many locations where you can hire one of these beasts of the road for a spot of "dune-bashing" - one of the most popular day trips in Dubai. There are many tour operators that organise trips to tear up and down the sand dunes and to hone your skills for next years Dakar rally. If you fancy an easier ride, then take a Wadi-bashing trip, which follow the dry river beds and if your skills are not up to the task, then there it is possible to hire a driver and just sit back and enjoy the action.
Many of the trips also allow for other desert activities to be included such as sand-boarding, and provide all of the equipment together with a convenient lift back up to the top of the dunes.
It is usually best to go the whole hog and to combine an overnight stay in one of the Bedouin camps, sample the desert food, experience a belly dance or two, and to marvel at the clear desert skies and one of the best locations to see the Milky Way in its full glory.

Camel racing

One of the most memorable experiences in Dubai must be a visit to a camel race. Camel racing is an ancient sport steeped in tradition and is big business in the Emirates and Arab states. The races take place on Thursday and Friday nights throughout the winter (October to April), with the highlight taking place at the Al Wathba racetrack in the annual Zayed Grand Price Race, held on UAE National Day. In Dubai at the Nad al Sheba racetrack, the races are held in the early morning which is usually set aside for the Sheikh's camels, whereas the afternoon races are open to all. Sheikh Zayed is the owner of over 14,000 camels with an entourage of over 9000 workers to look after the animals and train them for the races. The races are free to attend, and it is recommended that you bring binoculars, to help you view the action on the 10 kilometre tracks. Betting is illegal in the UAE, however for the jockeys and owners there are big money prizes on offer, with the most successful racing camels worth many millions of dollars, especially those winners of the most prestigious race, the Kings Cup held annually in Dubai.
